For users looking to convert a huge range of video formats, Total Video Converter supports more than a dozen. Unfortunately, problems with the software mean that using it for anything but the most basic of tasks can be difficult and frustrating.

Supported Formats

Total Video Converter supports all of the standard video formats including MPEG, WMV, AVI, and FLV, but it also supports a few of the more obscure formats like RMVB and PSP. Audio formats include everything from WMA and MP3 to OGG and WAV. Most people shouldn't have any problem finding the proper format for their video and audio files.

Unfinished Work

Most of the time, Total Video Converter does what it says - it converts files quickly and effectively. Unfortunately, Total Video Converter is prone to crashing. Crashes occurred across almost all of the selected formats. Seemingly at random, those same video files would successfully convert on the second or third attempt. When using the integrated video editing tools, Total Video Converter crashed even more consistently.

Even worse, it was difficult to figure out how to use certain features. Shortcuts would randomly disappear only to show up again later. The included documentation is very comprehensive, but the program is so unintuitive I still had difficulty locating advanced features even with the readme file opened up beside me.

Bottom Line

If Total Video Converter weren't half as buggy, I would recommend it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, it crashes too frequently and for too many different reasons to recommend, which is a shame because Total Video Converter offers a solid suite of video editing and conversion tools that would otherwise be perfect for casual editing. Perhaps future versions will fix the myriad problems present in version 3.71, but for the time being, stick with the more stable video editing software options out there.
